If you are partial to the retro look of the 06 Pony Package emblems, you can replace the stock GT fender emblem with the 2006 Pony Package running horse emblem.  This Emblem can also be installed on V6 mustangs that do not have fender emblems at all.  The emblem from the 2006 pony package can be purchased from many vendors or your local Ford dealer.  These emblems are made of plastic and come with double sided tape and 2 alignment pins.  The alignment pins are the same size and in the same location as the GT emblems, so these emblems are direct replacements for the GT emblems without any modifications.  The ford part numbers are 6R3Z16228A (right) and 6R3Z16228B (left).

The first step is removing the stock GT emblems.  The GT Emblems are attached with 3M tape and have two pins that are used for alignment.  To remove the emblem, use a hair drier and some fishing line.  Use the hair drier to heat up the GT emblems.  This will loosen the glue on the 3m tape a bit.  Then, use the fishing line as you would floss and try to get it under the emblem.  Remember there are pins on the emblems and you won’t be able to go straight across. Once you remove the emblems, you may have to use goop-be-gone or some other type of cleanser to remove any residue remaining from the 3M tape.  At this point you should be able to see the two alignment holes on the fender.

To install the new emblems, remove the backing form the 3M tape and align the new emblems with the holes in the fender.    For those who have a V6, the alignment pins can be cut off and the emblems attached with just double sided tape.  The location of the pony is shown in the attached picture.

Another option is to use the emblems from either a ’68 or earlier mustang.  These emblems are a bit smaller and are made of metal. To install these you can either cut and file off the alignment pins and use 3M tape, or you can create a template out of thin paper or cardboard.  Start by pushing the alignment pins through the paper and then trace the emblem.  Cut the template and align it using the measurements above.  Mark alignment hole locations an drill the alignment holes.  Use some type of paint to cover the holes and protect it from rusting.  Use 3M tape to attach the emblems to the fender.
