This is a fairly
simple and
inexpensve mod for those of us that are fond of the Hurst T shifter
knob. The Hurs 1530019 is a universal shifter knob that comes
with a variety of helical inserts to fit just about every shifter on
the market.

|
To start, lift the shift
boot by gently
prying it up. Now, remove the shifter knob by rotating it
counterclockwise and removing it along with the shift boot.
Separate the shiftboot from the knob, it will simply pull off.
To make the shifter look chrome, buy a 3" chrome nipple from your local
hardaware store.
|
To make the nipple fit,
cut one of the
treaded ends in half the long ways and then cut off the pipe as shown
in the picture below. Use a cloth on a bench vise to hold the
nipple and use a dremmel cut-off wheel to make the cuts.
When the nipple is fitting on the shifter propperly, measure the
distance from the bend in the shifter to the start of the threads on
the shifter. Cut the nipple to this size leaving it just a
little
bit long.
 |
Find the propper sized
helical spacer
and insert it in the shifter handle. Use loctite between the
helical spacer and the shifter handle (not the shifter shaft).
When done, screww the shifter onto the shaft and tightent it
until it is at an angle that feels comfortable to you. You
may
have to trim the nipple slightly using a file, that why you want to
leave it a little on the long side so you can make adjustments at this
point.
When done, remove the shifter knob. Take the shift boot and
turn
it insde out. Place a rubber band around the tip and gently
slide
it over the chrome nipple. The rubber band needs to be tight.

|
At this point, flip the
boot right side up and snap it back down onto the console.
|
Now, screw the shifter
handle back on.
